The lid must be closed firmly in order for the kettle to turn off automatically, if the lid is open, it will just keep heating. I think theres a temperature sensor in the kettle which turns it off once it reaches a specific temp. And, it doesnt turn off immediately when boiling starts, it turns off maybe 10-15 seconds after the water is boiling.

Q: Where does the little washable spout filter go? I'll be darned if I can figure out where and how to attach it. Feeling a little dumb:)

Glad I wasn't the only one who felt like a fool. But I finally got it to snap in. Because the kettle's black it's REALLY hard to see the little "grooves" on either side the filter snaps into. The filter itself (like a little arrowhead) pretty much points STRAIGHT down and be sure that the curved, finished side points to the FRONT of the kettle. May take a couple of tries (like 8 or 9 for me!). When you can snap the lid down tight, and that slotted, pointed piece lands down in front of the filter without knocking it loose, then you know you've done it.

Q: Where cam I purchase replacement screens? One of my old ones has a hole in it but I also need a back up.

I know exactly what you are asking... The remark that quoted "I have no idea what your and it should be you're asking. Look inside the pitcher or kettle, there is a tiny screen that needs replaced every once and awhile. My is ripped and I wanted to buy a replacement. Do your homework before answering any questions. If I find out where to buy the replacement screen I will let you know. Unless you already know the answer being this was asked 5 years ago.

BPA Background - Is BPA Safe?
The truthful answer is that the subject is controversial and no one knows with certainty if BPA is or is not safe.

BPA (bisphenol A) is a chemical used in producing various types of plastics, commonly polycarbonates used in food packaging (e.g., baby bottles, plastic sippy cups, water bottles) and resins to coat the interior of food packages, including cans (e.g, soup, vegetables, beer).

The concern for BPA is due to it's propensity to leach from the packaging into the contained food or beverage which is subsequently ingested. BPA mimics the hormone estrogen and may affect human endocrine function. Research has reported no observed adverse effects at the FDA "safe" level of <5000 mcg/kg/day, with estimated daily ingestion of <0.5 mcg/kg/L for adults and children age two and older. Per FDA, concern for adult toxicity is "negligible." The primary concern regards toxicity in developing fetuses, infants, and children younger than two, which FDA reports as "some concern."

FDA has not restricted BPA in most food packaging materials. They have restricted BPA in baby bottles, sippy cups, and infant formula packaging, although the restriction was due to FDA regulations and not due to safety concerns. Many food producers have voluntarily eliminated BPA from their packaging.

BPA-containing plastics will have resin id code 7 although not every type of plastic with code 7 contains BPA (polycarbonates do). Look for a triangle enclosing the number 7 on the package to determine if the package might contain BPA. You may also see "PC."

The LD50 of BPA in mice is 4g/kg of body weight [1]. If the same LD50 level exists in humans (very likely not) then an 80 kg (176.4 lb) person would have to ingest 320 g (11.3 oz) of BPA to have a 50% chance of dying from acute BPA exposure. It is extremely unlikely that one could ingest enough food or drink to die from BPA exposure [2].

In rodent studies, transmission of BPA from a breastfeeding mother to infant was insignificant at levels 100-1000 times  higher than human exposure.

BPA is unlike toxic metals such as lead or cadmium which are not naturally eliminated from the body and can accumulate to unhealthy, and even deadly, levels. Ingested BPA is rapidly absorbed, detoxified, and eliminated within 2-3 days.

Conclusion: Per FDA, BPA ingestion due to BPA leaching from packaging material is safe for adults and children age two and older.

Caveat: In packaging which has eliminated BPA, replacement chemicals such as bisphenol S (BPS) and other biphenols are often used and these chemicals are known to have endocrine effects similar to BPA. Also, the various types of plastics are composed of thousands of chemicals, many of which have not been studied for harmful effects in humans. The effects due to leaching of chemicals in plastics from food packaging into food are not all known.

Is This Kettle BPA Free?
This kettle, Proctor Silex model K2070Y, is longer marketed on the Proctor Silex website. The replacement model number is K2070PS, which has the same dimensions and power as well as the same appearance. The K2070PS webpage does not specify any BPA content, however, the "kettles" FAQ  states, "All of our kettles are BPA free in all food zones."

Conclusion: The model K2070Y is very likely BPA free.
