Kefir dates back many centuries to the shepherds of the Caucasus mountains. They discovered that fresh milk carried in leather pouches would occasionally ferment into an effervescent beverage. In the Caucasian Mountains, legend has it that the resulting kefir “grains” (not a true grain–but a combined culture of yeast and bacteria) were a gift to the people from Mohammed, who instructed them on how to use the grains. Mohammed strictly forbade them from giving away the secret of kefir preparation to other people, or pass anyone kefir grains, because they would lose their “magic strength.” This legend explains why kefir grains and the method for kefir preparation have been surrounded by mystery for so long. In fact, there is an incredible tale of intrigue starring a beautiful woman, Irina Sakharova, who stole the kefir grains from a prince for Russia, which is perhaps the only reason the world knows of kefir today.

Graet stuff, thick & creamy.
Great stuff, thick, creamy.Didn't do well with first go, my room was not warm enough but tasted good although quite thin.Second go, I have a easyo yogurt unit and my jar fitted it perfectly, so put boiling water in bottom, added jar & kefir mix put lid on and next day perferct thick kefir.I have made 3 litres from one capsule so far, well worth the money.

Not able to ferment with capsules supplied
I have been preparing keffir for a while.tried twice to start with the supplied capsules and neither times the milk will ferment. Now gone back to my original starter

convenient and good
These small capsules are for one litre of milk, which is plenty for me. I make in two 500 ml jars, leave overnight in heated yoghurt maker. Very convenient and works every time.

Such a lot in a small package!
A very handy small package with sachets that are easy to store and use. I put the box in the fridge as soon as it arrived - don't leave it in a warm room as the Kefir will suffer.
