This is a great collection of the original Victorian era English classic horror tales. "The Modern Prometheus", "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" and "The String of Pearls" are just a few of the terrorizing nightmares that haunt the pages of this book. However, anyone looking at this book in the hopes that it is about the TV series of the same name would be sorely mistaken to think that it is so. But, if you are a fan of the Penny Dreadful TV series, I can guarantee you will still enjoy this, because many of the characters in the series are based on these original tales of fright. I am also a fan of the TV series... But, I was a fan of these stories long before the TV series was created.I may also add that anyone else who is also a fan of "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" would enjoy this, as well. "The String of Pearls", the story at the end of this book, is the original form of the story of Sweeney. In "The String of Pearls", a youth named Mark Ingestrie (role of Anthony) suddenly goes missing when he returns to London to deliver a string of pearls to his fiancee, Johanna Oakley. Two friends of his make inquiries as to his whereabouts and soon discover that he never left Fleet Street (where the barber's shop is located), his dog refuses to leave the barber's doorstep and the string of pearls never reached Johanna. Sweeney's shop assistant, Tobias Raggs, begins to suspect him of some foul play upon discovering a hoard of precious valuables that came in on customers and never left with them. The church across the way begins to stink like a charnel house. All clues lead to the door of the barber- Sweeney Todd.

Great gift
Beautiful book and preserved in its original protective plastic cover. Bought this as a birthday gift for my sister-in-law. She loves it!

Ok but a few things to consider perhaps
Not bad. Has a very nice introduction and obviously great cover. But the stories inside include such popular classics as Frankenstein and Jekyll and Hyde- not true Penny Dreadfuls which would have been fascinating, but gothic novels which you may own or wish to buy separately. Very small print.

Maybe i was just unlucky with my copies
At first look this book was a beautiful, very pretty and gothic looking! Luckily it wasnt a present as when i started flicking though it i discovered a page that was crumpled in and when straightend out it struck out a good cm out from the rest.I ordered a replacement which unfortunately arrived with a blob of glue along the silver page edge of the book. After carefully separating all the pages that were stuck together and making sure none of them ripped i decided to keep this copy. Just a bit disappointing as these books are not cheap
